Since our founding in October 1954, The Sertoma Club of Mesa has served many charitable organizations with financial and volunteer manpower resources locally and through Sertoma, Inc., nationally. Sertoma has as its primary function assisting people who have speech or hearing impairments. All local clubs, however, are autonomous and are free to assist whatever organization or group best fits our purposes.

A major fund raising activity we have sponored and hosted, in conjunction with Mi Amigos, the Thanksgiving Day Turkty Trot (A 10K nationally sanctioned race in conjunction with a 1 Mile and a 2 Mile Fun Rum.) This event began in 1959. We draw participants from all over the United States. Many families have this event as a family tradition, returning each year as part of their Thanksgiving day celebration. Participant ages range from babies being pushed in carriages to those in their 70's. It is truly a fun and profitable event drawing between 4,000 and 5,000 runers

“Jeff Groscost Memorial-Citizenship in Action-Merit Badge Clinic”
This program will present most all the required information and activities to qualify for the BSA Citizenship in the Nation Merit Badge. Each youth or group of youths should provide for their own transportation to the Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix.
Class will be held in the House of Representatives chambers building at the state capitol Time: 8:00 am – 1:00 pm; at 1700 West Washington, Phoenix

We have a also sponsored and organized the July 4th Independence day Celebration for the City of Mesa, This event was begun in 1960 and has also become one of our trademarks in the community. The event is held in the Mesa Community College Stadium with prefireworks entertainment and games for the kids. Event photos are shown above and below.
While our organization focuses on speech and hearing impaired people and needed services for them, we also seek to contribute to other community needs-based organizations. As is evident from this list all are not speech and hearing related, but are certainly worthy causes.
Here are a couple views of parts of the CARE Facility.which was mostly built under the direction of one of our members, Dave Fixhcbeck, ArizonaWest Contracting, with mostly donated labor and materials, Details can be seen on CARE website

There sits an angel teaching 7 deaf kindergarteners sign language. We walked in on the class while it was in session. The look on their faces was a sure indicator of the love these children have for their teacher. Angel Ramos and his wife Marla are the backbone of the Sequoia School For The Deaf and hard of Hearing. We are fortunate to have them iin our community and in our club..
Each organization has details about themselves ontheir respective websites
Entry fees, commercial sponsors and private donors provide a substantial funds that enable us to be generous with the organizations we support. We find that people in this area are very generous, even in the more difficult times because they know the funds are spent prudently, Beczuse of the reputation we have they support us with confidence. Most of the staff used to carry out these activities are vollunteers. Some are from the beneficiaries of our donations to them and others, such as the Boy Scouts of America anxiously cheerfully donate service hours

One of the tenets of Sertoma is to promote and celebrate our heritage as citizens of the United States of America. While the Independence Day Celebration andConstitution Commemoration are periodic occurrances, we try to engender conscious appreciation and gratitude for the blessings of liberty established by our founding fathers.
Each year we have about 300 Boy Scouts attend this class and qualify for their Citizenship in The Nation Merit Badge; truly a worthwhile effort.
PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE MAJOR CHANGE IN VENUE AND MAGNITUDE OF OUR TRADITIONAL FIREWORKS SHOW. READ BELOW
When the fireworks show was established by the Sertoma Club of Mesa in 1960, It was intended that the show was our gift to the citizens of our community. As time has worn on the costs of putting on the show have escalated to a point that we had to change venues and began chargind a nominal fee to get into the stadium fo watch up close. Nevertheless the size of the show has grown to the extent that brginning in 2010 the club has now joined in partnership with the City of Mesa to organize a freedom celebration in downtown Mesa on the Friday and Saturday nearest the 4th of July. (Go to the July 4th Celebration of Freedom page for specifics.)
